Charles Mate is passionate about the development of the capital market in Zambia starting
with his appointment as Project Manager to operationalize the Lusaka Stock Exchange (LuSE) in 1994 and serving as its first General Manager till 2001. In this period, he initiated the successful listing of Government bonds on the LuSE in 1998.
He has previously served as a member of the southern Africa regional panel of the Financial Deepening Challenge Fund of the UK/DFID and as Chairman of the Financial Markets Working Group under the Financial Sector Development Plan (FSDP) for Zambia.
In 2014-16, Mr. Mate served a Presidential appointment to operationalize the newly formed Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia (IDC) in the capacity of Executive Director responsible for investments. In this period the IDC, initiated and developed two solar PV power projects under the IFC / World Bank Scaling Solar initiative which achieved path breaking energy tariffs of as low as US 6 cents/kWh in 2016 and became the first grid connected solar plants in Zambia in 2019.
He started his work experience in the mining industry with ZCCM followed by stints with Zambia Oxygen (now BOC Gases/Afrox) and Lonrho Zambia.
Mr. Mate holds a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering and an MBA in Finance.
