Joseph Mate is an experienced deal maker with origination, structuring and execution experience across Africa. In a career spanning 12 years, Joseph has worked on transactions with a combined value of over USD 8 billion, across Agriculture, Financial Institutions, Infrastructure Finance, Power and Telecommunications ; providing senior debt, mezzanine finance and acquisition finance facilities to some of the continents leading corporations .
Prior to joining Qbera, Joseph spent a year with Trade and Development Bank (“TDB”) – the DFI for the East and Southern African region. He was initially as an inhouse consultant providing financial modelling and structuring expertise to the trade and project finance teams. He quickly rose to the position of Head of Advisory Operations where he was tasked with formulating an Advisory strategy for TDB. In less than 12 months with TDB, Joseph build a 5 man deal structuring and financial modelling centre of excellence and was instrumental in executing a USD 100 million balance restructure and subordinated debt facility for one of the continent’s leading Telecommunications and Media groups. Joseph was awarded the 2017 TDB Presidential Excellence award for his work on this landmark transaction.
Joseph joined TDB from Barclays Africa where he was a Vice President with the Corporate and Investment Banking division and a founding member of the Africa Debt Finance business (ex RSA). Joseph was based in Johannesburg and worked on several landmark transactions across 8 jurisdictions including the ley markets – Kenya, Egypt and Nigeria.; covering infrastructure financing, Power, TMT and financial services. Joseph was instrumental in building the Barclays East Africa debt business and spent a significant amount of time in Nairobi establishing important client and banking relationships which laid the foundation for subsequent syndicated loan mandates.
Before Barclays, Joseph was an Investment Banking Manager with Standard Bank of South Africa; initially as part of an Analyst programme for African professionals covering corporate finance and lending products, and later joining the Leverage Finance team focussed on Southern and Central African transactions.
Joseph started his career with the audit practice of Deloitte and Touche Zambia. He has an MBA from Wits Business School and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (UK). Joseph is also a member r of the Loan Market Association (LMA), and played a pivotal role in the development of an LMA standard loan document template for Africa.
Joseph is passionate about capital market development, particularly development alternative asset classes to finance growth. Outside of the office Joseph enjoys reading, hiking and travelling.
